abstract

introduction: antibiotic resistance among bacteria in particular those producing extended spectrum beta lactamases (es- bls) has a very significant role in hospital acquired infections. some of the gram negative bacilli including klebsiella pneu- monia and escherichia coli are known to be esbl producers which cause uncontrollable infections because they are also often resistant to other antimicrobial agents. this study was designed to assess the esbl producing gram-negative bacilli among clinical isolates of inpatients at shohada-ye ashayer hospital, khorramabad, iran. materials and methods : samples were processed with routine laboratory methods and gram-negative bacilli were identified by standard tests. esbl producing gram-negative bacilli were screened by macconkey agar containing 4 mg/liter ceftazi- dime and confirmed with the double disk synergy method. results: fifty-three cases (23.6%) of 225 total isolated gram-negative bacilli were positive in terms of esbl production. klebsiella pneumoniae comprising 20 cases (8.9%) was the dominant organism producing esbls followed by escherichia coli (10 cases; 4.4%) and pseudomonas aeruginosa (10 cases; 4.4%). the most esbl producing organisms were found in urine samples (21 cases; 39.6%). ten cases (18.9%) of isolates were from samples collected with sterile bronchoscopy. conclusion: results of the study indicated that esbl producing gram negative bacilli are frequently isolated from shohada- ye ashaier hospital. regarding the high resistance of these strains against many of the antibiotics and even against carbapen- ems, health care professionals need to plan policies to fight the induction and spread of such strains.

Screening of Extended Spectrum Beta lactamase Producing Gram Negative Bacilli Isolated from Clinical Cases

Abstract Background and objectives: (ESBL) strain is one of the emerging health related problems in the world recently. Some of the species of the gram-negative bacilli including Klebsiella Pneumonia & Escherichia Coli are well known ESBL producing among bacteria, and they cause uncontrollable infections. This Cross-sectional study was designed to asses the ESBL producing gra...

Rectal Carriage of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Gram-Negative Bacilli in Community Settings in Madagascar

BACKGROUND Extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing Enterobacteria (ESBL-PE) emerged at the end of the 1980s, causing nosocomial outbreaks and/or hyperendemic situations in hospitals and long-term care facilities. In recent years, community-acquired infections due to ESBL-PE have spread worldwide, especially across developing countries including Madagascar. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to deter...

Prevalence and Antibiotic Resistance Pattern of Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase- (ESBL-) Producing Gram Negative Bacilli isolated from Clinical Samples of hospitalized Patients in a hospital in Gorgan

Background & Aim: Antibiotic resistance among gram-negative bacilli is currently one of the major challenges for the health system in developing countries. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and antibiotic resistance pattern of common ESBL-producing gram negative bacilli isolated from clinical specimens of hospitalized patients in Falsafi Hospital in Gorgan. Methods: In this ...

The effect of silver nanoparticles on Gram-negative bacilli Resistant to Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase Enzymes

Abstract: Background and objectives: Antibiotic resistant to Antimicrobial agents is one of the most important concern in hospitals, which can lead to increased costs, treatment fails and mortality rates. The aim of this study was identification of Gram-negative bacilli resistant to extended-spectrum β-lactamase Enzymes (ESBLs) and determination of the effect of silver nanoparticles on the...

Extended-spectrum Beta-lactamase Producing Gram Negative Bacteria in Iran: a Review

BACKGROUND The emergence and spread of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Gram- negative bacteria (GNB), particularly in Enterobacteriaceae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, have increased all over the world. ESBLs are characterized by their ability to hydrolyze β-lactams, early cephalosporins, oxyimino-thiazolyl cephalosporins, and monobactams, but not cephamyci...

The Association Between Genetic Variants in Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases and AmpC-producing Gram-Negative Bacilli and Antibiotic Resistance

Background and Objective: A large group of genes associated with extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and AmpC expression is involved in inducing antibiotic resistance in various bacteria. Identifying these genes and assessing their harboring will be crucial in determining the pattern of antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to characterize genetic variants in extended-spectrum beta-lacta...
